This method accounts for an additional parameter that affects cost: floor-to-ceiling height.

#### Cubic Foot of Volume Estimate Example

Assume that a historical file contains a warehouse building that cost $2.4 million that was 50 ft x 80 ft with a basement, three floors, and an attic. Determine the cost for a 60 ft x 30 ft warehouse building with no basement, two floors, and an attic. The ceiling heights are as follow.

Old Structure :

1st Floor = 14

2nd Floor = 10

3rd Floor = 10

New Structure :

1st Floor = 12

2nd Floor = 12

3rd Floor = –

Solution using Cubic Foot of Volume Estimate

Old Structure :

1st Floor = 14 ft x 4000 ft^2 = 56,000 ft^3

2nd Floor = 10 ft x 4000 ft^2 = 40,000 ft^3

3rd Floor = 10 ft x 4000 ft^2 = 40,000 ft^3

TOTAL = 136,000 ft^3

$2,400,000 / 136,000ft^3 = $17.65/ft^3

New Structure :

1st Floor = 12 ft x 1800 ft^2 = 21,600 ft^3

2nd Floor = 12 ft x 1800 ft^2 = 21,600 ft^3

TOTAL = 43,200 ft^3

43,200 ft^3 x $17.65/ft^3 = $762,500
