Eid is a special time when families will spend time together and happily exchange gifts and worship. In Islam, there are two Eid celebrations each year. Th first Eid is Eid Ul Fitr which is celebrated at the sighting of the new moon that signs the end of the Holy Month of Ramadan. The second Eid is Eid Ul Adha which is celebrated in the 12th month of the Hijra calendar and at the same time with the Hajj or Pilgrimage to Makkah.

Eid Ul Fitr is special celebration to begin the end of the Holy Month of Ramadan and lasts for three days. There is actually a change of the atmosphere in the time of Eid in the UAE; it is a special time for celebration and reflection at the same time. The usual Eid greeting is “Eid Mubarak”; this is a good phrase that you can hear very often during Eid. It is believed that it is polite to greet all by saying the phrase “Eid Mubarak”.

In a Muslim family traditions it is common for the family to go buying new clothes as you are expected to be well dressed in your best clothes at this holy time, usually three sets of clothing are bought for the three days of Eid, but this is not a must. Once all the Islamic obligations have been done at the prayer place, the people will ask for forgiveness from any people that they possibly have wronged, or they usually give forgiveness to any wrongdoers. It is a time for starting a new good life. The people will then stay together for a big lunch while dressed in their best. This is mandatory as they are showing unity as a family. At this time gifts will be exchanged. Money are given to the children of the family. It is quite normal for children to go to the neighbors, knock on the doors and say Eid Mubarak and get some small money as a special gift from the neighbors.
