Rates Overview

The Rate Type and Rate Source of an activity can be used to determine the price/unit, or rate, applied to an activity resource or role assignment.

Rate Types

A Rate Type is simply a narrative designation for a specific price-per-unit of work. Up to five Rate Types can be defined in the Project Management module. Your P6 administrator may or may not have modified the default Rate Type names, which are Price/Unit, Price/Unit2, and so on. For example, you might have Rate Types identified as Standard, Holiday, and so on. Each project has a default Rate Type specified.

Tip; The default Rate Type for a project is specified on the Projects > Details > Settings page.

Options for choosing an assignment rate

Every resource and role can have up to five price/unit values specified, corresponding to each of the five Rate Types. If you have the required module access and privileges, you can specify resource and role price/unit values on the Resources > Details > Units & Prices page.

When you assign a resource or role to an activity, the project’s default Rate Type is applied to the assignment and the Rate Source is set to resource or role, as applicable. The price/unit for the assignment is determined based on these two settings.

If you do not want to use the project’s default Rate Type for a specific assignment, you can choose a different Rate Type. If a resource or role does not have a price/unit defined for the Rate Type you select, the project default price/unit is applied to the activity. When the project default price/unit is applied, a caret symbol (^) appears in the Price/Unit field on the Activity Resource Details page.

Additionally, if an assignment has both a resource and a role designated, you can use the Rate Source field to specify whether you want to use the rate for the resource or the role. If you want to record a specific price/unit for an assignment instead of applying the rate for resource or role, you can use the Rate Source field Override option.
