Paddle mixing blade.
Resurfacing Concrete Patio Step by Step Instructions
When dealing with cement-based materials, you should always wear waterproof gloves and eye protection. Temperatures must stay above 50 F degrees for at least 8 hours and must be protected from freezing for 24 hours after working on it.
Step 1 Cleaning The Concrete Patio
Thoroughly clean the existing concrete to make sure the good adhesion of the new concrete patio surface.
NOTE: a high strength, 3500 psi pressure washer should be utilized to clean any oil, dirt, grease or degenerating concrete.
Repair deeply spalled areas and large cracks.
Soak the concrete patio surface with water and then remove any standing water.
Step 2 Mixing the Concrete Patio Resurfacer
Mix the concrete patio resurfacer using a five-gallon bucket and a 1/2 -drill and paddle mixer (you should not use hand mixing and standard concrete barrel-type mixers).
NOTE: it is important that the concrete patio expansion joints and control joints are well maintained to allow for concrete patio movement. Weather stripping can be used to keep Concrete Resurfacer away from going into the joints.
Step 3 Measuring The Mix
Measure and add 3-1/2 quarts of clean cool water to a five-gallon bucket to mix one 40-pound bag of Concrete Resurfacer (the concrete patio resurfacer must be poured into the mixing water).
Step 4 Mixing The Concrete Patio Resurfacer Mix
Mix the resurfacer and the water for about 5 minutes until a lump-free pourable consistency is achieved. If the mix is too thick, add water sparingly to reach the consistency of syrup; if the mix is too thin, additional powder can be added. Watch this mixing process carefully.
Step 5 Pouring The Concrete Patio Resurfacer
Pour the concrete patio resurfacer onto the existing concrete in one-foot wide strips.
Step 6 Scrubbing
Scrub the material into the concrete patio surface using a long handled squeegee.
Step 7 Spreading the Concrete Patio Resurfacer
Spread the concrete patio resurfacer evenly back and forth onto the slab.
Step 8 Applying Finish
Apply a non-slip finish using a concrete broom after about 5 minutes.
TIP: make full broom strokes across the entire distance of the work area without stopping (all broom strokes should be made in the same direction for uniformity of appearance).
Step 9 Concrete Patio Curing
Moist cure with a fine water mist for 24-48 hours in temperatures over 90 F degrees.
Step 10 Waiting
Concrete Patio Resurfacer will be strong enough to support foot traffic in about 7 hours and vehicle traffic in 24 hours.
