This article is about 5 things to watch carefully in Residential Foundation Construction. When we are constructing a residential building, a house, we need to watch how the foundation is constructed carefully. For financial reason, usually the constructor tends to make the foundation as small as possible. This will save some money. But this may not be good for the strength of the residential. So, in Residential Foundation Construction, you need to consider several things.
In Residential Foundation Construction, typically the foundation depth design will be in the range of 0.5 m to 1.5 m below the surface of the ground. This if the building does not have basement. If the building has basement, the depth will be 4 or more.
To design and work on Residential Foundation Construction, we need to consider these following things :
1. Loose Fill.
It is not a good idea to put foundation on loose fills. Loose fills can be dumped soil or construction waste. Loose fills will make the foundation not stable in the future. So, if your land has loose fill, you have to clean it first. You have to dig the ground untill you find stable natural soil.
2. Water Table.
It is not a good idea to put foundation below ground water level. The water will destroy the foundation later. This will be dangerous. In order to avoid this, you can construct a kind of basement wall surround the area. Or you can simply put fills on it, then compact it until it settle.
3. Soil Properties in The Area.
It is important to understand the soil properties of the soils at several important spots in the building area. This will affect the foundation depth for each spot. Some spots may be contains solid rock. The other may be clay. So, this will make each foundation in the area has diffence in depth.
4. Clay Properties.
If you are building a house on a clay soil, you have to keep in mind that this soil is not stable. Clay soil has the possibility to suffer from volume change. The foundation will be fail to keep its stability if we do not take any actions. Sand soil is always nice to put on the natural soil before the foundation.
5. Scour Possibility.
Just in case you want to do Residential Foundation Construction on a river or lake, there may be possibility for scour. Watch this carefully. The foundation depth should be deeper than the scour possible zone.
